Tangiers or the princess of the north is attractive because of the charm of its countless beaches and its archeologial treasures. The heart of tangiers is the great socco or great souk. This square has a permanent market which attracts both the mountain people and their wives in traditional dress, and tourists from all over the world. To the south the great souk is dominated by a high minaret decorated with polychrome earthenware tiles. The senses are constantly aroused by colours, aromas and sounds that are at first suprising but it rapidly becomes normal. In the jewellers’ street, as the name suggests, you will find beautiful glittering bangles and magnificent jewels, living proof of traditional Moroccan art. On leaving this Ali Baba’s cave, which seems to have a strong power of attraction over the female customers, far from the hustle and bustle of the souks is the peacefulness of the Mendoubia Garden, formerly part of the residence of the Mendoub, the sultan’s representative on the international commission.
